Ahumada Del Castillo Syndrome - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Ahumada-Del Castillo is a rare endocrine disorder affecting adult females. It is characterized by impairment in the function of the pituitary and hypothalamus glands. Women with this disorder have breasts and nipples of normal size and appearance. Secondary female characteristics, such as hair distribution and voice, are also normal. Since ovaries do not produce eggs; therefore, affected females cannot become pregnant. Symptoms may include the production of breast milk (lactation) not associated with nursing and the absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea) due to the lack of monthly ovulation (anovulation). A disorder characterized by galactorrhea and amenorrhoea. Three types are reecognized. First is Chiari-Frommel syndrome: persistent galactorrhoea and amenorrhea after giving birth.Second is Galactorrhoea-amenorrhoea not associated with pregnancy. There is oestrogen deficiency and decreased urinary gonadotropin levels.

Third is Galactorrhea-amenorrhea caused by a chromophobe prolactin-producing adenoma of the pituitary. Small tumors in the pituitary or hypothalamus glands may be responsible for Ahumada-Del Castillo. These tumors are frequently microscopic and extremely difficult to detect. Rarer causes of Ahumada-Del Castillo Syndrome may be associated with low levels of thyroid function (hypothyroidism), chronic use of dopamine-antagonistic drugs (i.e., chlorpromazine or thorazine), and discontinuation of oral contraceptives (birth control pills). Treatment of Ahumada Del Castillo syndrome on the physical side should include a well- ordered hygienic mode of living, a nutritious and bland diet, adequate mental and physical rest, daily exercise , agreeable, occupation, fresh air, regular hours of eating and sleeping, regulation of the bowels and wholesome companionship with others
