Blunt Penetrating Abdominal Injuries - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment


Blunt and penetrating abdominal injuries may damage major blood vessels and internal organs. Such injuries are potentially fatal; the prognosis depends on the extent of injury and the organs damaged but is improved by prompt diagnosis and surgical repair.

Causes of Blunt Penetrating Abdominal Injuries

The common causes of Blunt Penetrating Abdominal Injuries:

  • Motor vehicle crashes.
  • Fights, falls from heights.
  • Sports accidents.
  • Stabbings and gunshots.

Symptoms of Blunt Penetrating Abdominal Injuries

Some sign and symptoms related to Blunt Penetrating Abdominal Injuries are as follows:

  • May be incontinent.
  • Pale, cool, clammy skin.
  • Rapid, weak pulse, with evidence of shock.
  • Abdominal rigidity.
  • Rapid, shallow breathing.

Treatment of Blunt Penetrating Abdominal Injuries

  • The patient needs an immediate infusion of I.V. fluids and blood components to control hemorrhage and prevent hypovolemic shock.
  • Intubation and mechanical ventilation or supplemental oxygen, as well as insertion of a nasogastric (NG) tube and an indwelling urinary catheter may be required.
