Saeptic Arthritis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Septic arthritis, also called infectious arthritis, is caused by a bacterial infection or more rarely by a fungal or viral infection. Failure to recognize and to appropriately treat septic arthritis results in significant rates of morbidity and may even lead to death. Bacteria most commonly target your knee, though other joints can be affected by septic arthritis, including your ankle, hip, wrist, elbow and shoulder. The joint cavity is usually a sterile space, with synovial fluid and cellular matter including a few white blood cells. Many different types of bacteria (germs) can cause septic arthritis. In septic arthritis, germs infiltrate the joint and damage it, causing severe pain. Bacteria most commonly target your knee, though other joints can be affected by septic arthritis, including your ankle, hip, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Septic arthritis in the diabetic foot usually arises from contiguous osteomyelitis spreading into the joint. Arthritis refers to a group of more than 100 rheumatic diseases and other conditions that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints.

In very young children it breaks into the joint from the bone. It may be caused by bacteria entering the joint either through the bloodstream, after a penetrating injury or following an infection of a surrounding bone. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis can affect anyone at any age, including children. Septic arthritis usually affects just one joint, though occasionally it may occur in more than one joint at a time. Infection with a bacterium called Staph. Although any infectious agent may cause arthritis, bacterial pathogens are the most significant because of their rapidly destructive nature. The condition is typically acute, causing severe joint pain, inflammation, redness, and in some cases fever and chills but may also become chronic.
