Pseudomonas Infections - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Pseudomonas is present throughout the world in soil, water, and on the skin of animals and people. A pseudomonas infection is caused by a bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and may affect any part of the body. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative, oxidase-positive, motile rod, which frequently grows on agar in yellow-green iridescent colonies resulting from two pigments, pyocyanin and fluorescein, diffused in the medium. Pseudomonas is a clinically significant and opportunistic pathogen, often causing nosocomial infections. However, biochemically they are quite different in their metabolism and composition of cytoplasmic membrane. The focus of research is on infections provoked by the bacterial pathogen P seudomonas aeruginosa. When bacterial pneumonia occurs in previously healthy persons it is usually caused by one of only a few different organisms.

In most cases, however, pseudomonas infections strike only persons who are very ill, usually hospitalized. The pathogenesis of this organism is multifaceted and involves various toxins and proteases and the glycocalyx "slime." P. mallei - causes glanders, nodular, necrotic involvement of mucous membranes of nasal area. The site varies with the portal of entry, and the patient's particular vulnerability. It is one of those pathogens which provoke serious infections in patients with weakened immune systems. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of these opportunistic bacteria. It would be very unusual for a previously healthy patient to develop this type of pneumonia.

Causes of Pseudomonas Infections

There are various factors which give rise to the disease Pseudomonas Infections , but here we mentioned some of the common causes:

  • Risk factors for acquiring a pseudomonas infection include.
  • Having a serious illness.
  • Being hospitalized.
  • Undergoing an invasive procedure such as surgery; having a weakened immune system.
  • And being treated with antibiotics that kill many different kinds of bacteria.

Symptoms of Pseudomonas Infections

Some of the common sign and symptoms of the disease Pseudomonas Infections as follows:

  • Fever.
  • Tiredness.
  • Muscle pains.
  • Joint pains.
  • Chills.

Treatment of Pseudomonas Infections

Find effective treatment methods of treating Pseudomonas Infections :

  • Pseudomonas eye infections are treated with highly concentrated antibiotic drops.
  • If infection is treated with acetic acid drops and locally applied antibiotics, it usually improves quickly.
  • Necrotic tissue must be debrided and abscesses must be drained.
  • Several penicillins, including carbenicillin, ticarcillin, piperacillin, mezlocillin, and azlocillin, are active against Pseudomonas.
  • Specific choice of antibiotic must be based upon the history of pseudomonas sensitivity to the particular drug in the community and, if the organism is cultured, its specific sensitivity.
  • It is resistant to most of the commonly used compounds due to a unique cell membrane which severely limits the uptake of antibiotics.
