Campylobacteriosis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Campylobacteriosis is a bacterial infection that affects the intestinal tract and, rarely, the bloodstream. It is probably the most common cause of bacterial diarrhea in Wisconsin. Most people who become ill with campylobacteriosis get diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within 2 to 5 days after exposure to the organism. The illness typically lasts 1 week. Some persons who are infected with Campylobacter don't have any symptoms at all. The diarrhea may be bloody and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. CDC estimates 76 million people suffer foodborne illnesses each year in the United States, accounting for 325,000 hospitalizations and more than 5,000 deaths. Natural and manufactured chemicals in food products also can make people sick. Some diseases are caused by toxins (poisons) from the disease-causing microbe (germ), others by the human body's reactions to the microbe itself. These bacteria are fairly widespread, occurring in humans and animals, skin, soil, and water. They can live in any setting that provides nutrients, moisture, oxygen at room temperature. Chickens are the most common source of human infection. It is estimated that 1% of the general population is infected each year.

  • Most people recover without treatment. If the infection is severe or prolonged, erythromycin may be prescribed.
  • Severe symptoms can be treated with antibiotics.
  • Some people need extra fluids to prevent dehydration (drying up of bodily fluids).
  • Sometimes an antibiotic is prescribed in severe cases of illness. Patients should drink plenty of fluids as long as the diarrhea lasts. Antibiotics are occasionally used to treat severe cases or to shorten the carrier phase, which may be important for food handlers, children in day care, and health care workers.
